API 5L Line Pipe

Line pipe is held to a different standard from general pipe because of what it carries and the pressure it carries it at. API 5L governs the chemistry, the mechanical properties, the weld and the test regime, and the monogram may only be applied by a mill licensed by the American Petroleum Institute to do so.

We manufacture in both product specification levels. PSL 1 is the standard level for water and general transmission duty. PSL 2 carries the same strength floors but adds tighter chemistry limits, guaranteed impact toughness, mandatory non-destructive inspection and stricter documentation — it is what most oil and gas projects specify.

Grades run from Grade B up to X60. The X-number is the specified minimum yield strength in ksi, so X60 pipe is guaranteed to 60,200 psi minimum yield. The full strength table is below.

The certified size range is set by the licence scope rather than by the mill alone, so confirm the sizes and wall thicknesses on your project against our current certificate before specifying.
